Pricing the Web
No commentsPricing web devlopment projects can always be a pain and we have tried every model since being in business. I just read the best article on pricing the web over on A List Apart. This is the most encompassing article detailing every pricing model imaginable along with pros and cons. Great read for agencies and clients! Keep it Simple Stupid!
1 commentsNot every new web development project needs to be built on the latest CMS or the newest platform using SASS, LESS and the latest jQuery. Not everything has to be cutting edge, whizz-bang in your face! Sometimes it is okay and perfectly acceptable to just keep things simple. Some projects are just small enough and perfect enough to just be done in static HTML and CSS and left alone in its simplistic beauty. This is something that we have always felt here and it is good to see the guys over at 37Signals have the same opinion. Check out the great article they just wrote on the topic, http://signalvnoise.com/posts/3752-its-ok-not-to-use-tools, and remember.... sometimes we all just need to KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. ;)

Legacy Locker Acquired by PasswordBox
No commentsRockbeatspaper is happy to announce that Legacy Locker, a previous client of ours, has been acquired by PasswordBox, a free password manager application that we really love to use! RBP was contracted in 2009 to complete the branding, design and frontend development of the marketing site and application in-house as well as working closely on the backend development of the application utilizing a contract developer of ours. While we hate to see Legacy Locker go away, PasswordBox is a great company on the rise that recently completed its $6M series a round of funding and has grown to over 1M users since its public launch. This news is just another notch in our belt of working with successful startups! You can read more about the acquisition at Techcrunch.

Bootstrapped and Profitable
No comments37Signals has posted another great article highlighting how another great company, Huckberry, started their business. Being bootstrapped and profitable ourselves, more profitable some days than others, this article hit real close to home with how we started our business and continue to evaluate other opportunities. I think the biggest thing to take away from this article is to just get out there and do it! Build something. Ship something. DO SOMETHING!
Our philosophy has always been to make mistakes quickly and learn from them. I love this advice, "don't worry about problems you don't have!" You're gonna throw out your first pancake anyways! http://37signals.com/svn/posts/3577-bootstrapped-profitable-proud-huckberry

To Blog or Not to Blog?
No commentsAs you can see, it has been awhile since anybody has been around here on the blog and things are getting a little dusty. We are so busy with work and life, that when we do find free time, our main focus is not to write an article. So as I site here trying to determine the fate of our blog on our site, I thought it might be good to get the reader's opinion. If there are any... What do the web design business owners think? Is blogging a productive task that brings business in some manner? Or just another dull thing that is being done with little to no return? Let me know what you think and help me decide! :)

Agreement = Expectations
1 commentsCheck out this great article written by Greg Hoy, president of Happy Cog. Greg does a great job in this article of detailing what should be included in your project service agreements and individual statement of work for each project. Now these documents go by different names, and acronyms, from agency to agency, but every agency should have their operating and individual project terms stated in some form. Your clients will come to expect it! And so will their lawyers! ;) These documents help to set expectations and eliminate disagreements when issues arise. I think it also important to note that the author suggests being vague in the initial project phases when alot of the scope is yet to be fully defined. He also gives some other tips on addressing certain issues. So take some time to review and update your agreements as well as those of your clients. You won't regret it!

Obvious, Easy & Possible
No commentsHello all! It has been a long time since our last post. 2011 has been a great year for RBP and we have been extremely busy!
I ran across a great article post by Jason Fried at 37Signals that sheds a new light on how designers and developers should begin to view interface design & web development. It introduces the concept of "obvious, easy & possible" when planning and desiging a project. This is a big paradigm shift from the traditional concept of "low, medium & high" priority and a great way for web designers and developers to begin to plan projects. I also think it would beneficial for our clients to begin to rationalize project decisions in this manner by clarifying the reasoning behind tough decisions.
Take some time to check out Jason's post here - The Obvious, The Easy and The Possible - and we look forward to your feedback.

Sunday Best Websites has Launched!
No commentsDrum roll please.... We are proud to announce that we have finally launched Sunday Best Websites! This has been something that we have wanted to do for several years and it has been a long time in the making! And this explains why we have not posted anything to our blog since May 2011! ;-)
Anybody who knows us well and have seen our portfolio, knows that we are very passionate about doing quality work for churches. In our years at RBP, we have worked with many churches in many different situations and have come to understand the challenges facing churches who desire a quality web presence. From committees to limited budgets to content administration issues, we have seen it and dealt with it all with our church clients. We wanted to craft a service that would help overcome these obstacles for the church and allow them to stay focused on their ministry while we stayed focused on what we do best. It is our goal to make sure that every church has access to a high-quality, elegantly simple & great looking website!
This is a minsitry for us to help bring people to Christ and build God's kingdom! As with any ministry, awareness is key and is the focus of all our promotion and marketing efforts at this time. We welcome your feedback and ideas as we strive to make things better. We also welcome your help in spreading the word about Sunday Best! Tell everyone you know about us! There are many cool things to come!

Preach On, Brother!
No commentsI know it has been awhile since my last post, but I have finally pulled my head above water and found an article to explain exactly what I have been so busy with lately. And no it is not fantasy football! Although I am on the fringe of my first visit to the playoffs this season!! ;)
We have been busy developing great sites for great clients using the Expression Engine (EE) CMS platform. Jamie Rumbelow over at Think Vitamin has written a great article explaining why EE is the cold blooded killer in the CMS war and Why You Need to Embrace Expression Engine! Jamie is a far better writer than I and does a wonderful job of explaining all the major benefits of EE! These are the same benefits that have made us decide to switch our development to EE solely over the past 5 years and that we have been preaching to clients and industry partners alike!
So if you or anyone you know are looking for RBP's great level of design and development in EE, please contact us or start with our RFP form.

We are launching new mobile services
No commentsAs web designers and developers, we often consider ourselves to be on the forefront of technology and newness and we hang out with all the cool web kids in the hottest internet spots. So you can imagine the head-scratching that was taking place as Dave and I asked ourselves the following question:
"WHY are we not offering any mobile services to our clients??!!"
Here we were, two fairly connected and well-informed dudes running a sophisticated web firm that had answers to all of the major concerns that exist within our clients' brains. Simple, elegant and highly usable web sites? Check. Search engine optimized content plans and all the under-the-hood stuff that makes Google giddy? Check. Easy-to-use content management systems that put control of their sites back into the hands of our clients? Check. Standards-based development practices, with the coolest CSS and javascript doo-dads and thingamabobs? We don't really focus on too many acronyms, but yes, check on those things too. Versions of our clients' web sites that are optimized solely for the mobile browsing experience? Ch----, wait a minute, we don't do that!!! Boo.
Well now we do. This week, we have launched our mobile web design service with much fanfare and hoopla. We aren't waiting until we have it perfected and we fully expect you all to have questions that we haven't yet answered. But we are going for it. Why? Because we took a peek at the numbers and as we all know, numbers don't lie, right?
I state those statistics with a certain balance of optimism and sarcasm. Optimistic because no matter where you get your numbers it is obvious that the mobile web is here to stay. Sarcastic because 87.5% of all statistics are made up on the spot, so it is difficult to believe every statistic we read. But regardless of the numbers, we do believe that your customers are increasingly going to the mobile web to learn more about you, or your competitor. They are looking for your address, your phone number and the latest special you are running in the location nearest them. They are waiting in line all the time for something and are choosing to pull out their web-enabled phone or smartphone to pass the time. What are your hours of operation? Is your menu available online? How do I get to your location? All these are questions that are being asked regardless of whether or not you have a web site at all, not to mention a mobile optimized site. Are you going to be waiting for them with answers to their questions? Or will they tap in your web address and find a tiny scaled-down version of your desktop site that must be zoomed, tapped and scrolled to death just to find your phone number or a link to a map? We hope not.
So let us know what you think. Poke and prod around a bit. We want to make it simple and easy to understand for you, with a fixed price for a basic site* and a quick turnaround time to match. Keep an eye on our blog for more articles in the future dealing with the ins and outs and best practices of optimizing your site for the mobile experience.
* The specs for a basic site are outline on our mobile web design service page

The Problems with Flash
4 commentsFlash development definitely has a place in the world of the web. While Flash has several beneifts including practically no browser issues, great interactivity and easily handling complex animations, there are many disadvantages to using Flash. These disadvantages are the reason that we discourage the use of Flash except in cases where it is absolutely the best tool. Given the advancements that have been made with web standards and javascript libraries, including Jquery and Prototype, there are more alternatives methods to Flash at this time.
Our recommendation has always been to use Flash where it makes sense and stay away from developing main functionality, such as site navigation, and entire sites within Flash. The main reason for this is that Flash is not search engine friendly. Businesses want their sites to be found and Flash requires many additional steps to configure Flash movies for search indexing while text is still not picked up by search engines. With the increasing move to mobile web, another major disadvantage to Flash is that it is not supported on many mobile platforms, including the iPhone and the upcoming iPad. While Flash development does have its uses, there are several issues with buildiing sites in Flash.

Start With Why: Work From the Inside Out
No commentsSimon Sinek is a marketing consultant and author. He is best known for developing "The Golden Circle," a model based on human decision-making that guides organizations on how to inspire people to buy or support any product, company or idea. Simon has been invited to talk about this concept across the United States and around the world. You can view a great video of a recent talk that he gave at the TEDx Puget Sound Conference in September 2009. In this simple talk, Simon does a great job of detailing "The Golden Circle" concept, explaining the concept behind starting with why and why we are naturally wired to start from the inside out in every successful task we complete. He wraps all this up into the basis for great leadership using real examples of success and failure from past history.
Take a look and let us know what you think below!!!

Above the Fold: Fact or Fiction?
1 commentsIn the web design industry, "above the fold" is a term commonly used by professionals and clients alike to describe prime content placement. For those that do not know, above the fold is a graphic design term that refers to the most important content being in the top half of the page or above the fold in a newspaper. For a long time standing, the standard has been to keep all important information above the fold and is an expected request of the client. However, recently the concept is becoming more of a myth as users become more accustomed to the idea of scrolling long pages of content.
Now don't get me wrong - it is still necessary to keep the most important information/content on a page above the fold. It does not make sense to place your global navigation in the footer of a page. However, user testing is showing that it is not mandatory to cram all the information in the top half of the page and that doing so actually discourages further exploration of additional information on a page. Users are used to scrolling and actually use the scrollbar to assess the length of the page and the amount of content below the fold. This fact has been proven through user testing and eye tracking where it is found that users pay alot of attention to the scrollbar. A great article reporting these findings can be found here. Take a look and let's work to debunk the "above the fold" myth!!

Content is King!
3 commentsAnyone familiar with a creative design project, from print to web-based initiatives, understands that content is king and a major player in the success of a project from the very beginning. Since our inception at Rockbeatspaper, we have been preaching to our clients the value of content from the beginning of a project, which has been met with mixed responses. Some clients understand the value of great content and others believe it can play second fiddle to a great design or concept. So let's set it straight... content is the keystone of a project and everything builds upon its successful creation.
Users return to your site and pay attention to your marketing efforts because of great, relevant content and not just a pretty design. Great content is also the major factor in converting a prospective user into a paying customer. It also makes sense that the people closest to the business with the best understanding of the product or service would be the best people to generate the content, but most often this is not the case. In-house at RBP, we do alot of things very well, however copywriting is not one of our core competencies. Enter the content strategy to the rescue.
Every project team member, from information architects and designers to project managers, can benefit from the creation of a successful content strategy. A content strategy can help meet your communication goals and messaging with the major task being an audit of current content. Is the content current and relevant to the user? Does it help to build and/or reinforce the brand of the product or service? Does the content work to meet the goals for the user at each point of the user experience? Once a content strategy is in place, every team member can work concurrently to meet the project goals and complete the project.
A great article on content strategies can be found at A List Apart. Another great tool to use in the generation of content after the content strategy has been created are content templates. We hope you find this article informative and we would love to hear your feedback in the comments area below.

Pricing Guide
6 commentsDesign services are like many other industries - you get exactly what you pay for. A high quality web site is an investment and we strive to make it the best investment possible. We try not to give ballpark estimates at any time without thoroughly reviewing project scope. Each project and client is different and has different needs, and can require a different approach. That being said, we do have a good idea of what our services generally cost and we understand that can be helpful in determining appropriate budgets. Here are some price ranges for our most common web projects, which are medium size projects. Keep in mind that these are ONLY estimates.
Now, of course, this is just a ballpark estimate based on past successful projects. Every estimate we do is tailored strictly to the needs of potential clients and can vary greatly. We do understand that budgets can be limited, and within reason, we will do our best to work with every client to tailor the scope of the project to the budget. There are also services like quality assurance, browser testing & debugging, SEO, etc that are included within our process. Many of these things can warrant special attention and become difficult to estimate.
Here are some common print & identity services and their associated costs:
Once again, keep in mind that all these are estimates and that every project and client is different. This is also not an exhaustive list of our services. There is much more that we can get accomplished for you and if you have any questions, please contact us and let's discuss your specific project needs.
We also want your feedback on our pricing guide. Let us know what you think in the comment area below. We will take all comments into consideration. Thanks!

Welcome to Our New Site!
5 commentsIt has been a long time in the works, but we have finally completed the redesign of our marketing site. Everyone in the design industry knows that their own site is always the one to get the least amount of love, and our site was no exception! The last iteration of our site has been in rotation for over 2 years and had truly become the red-headed step-child of the RBP family. Although, everyone raved about the design of our last site, it had served it's duty and was beginning to wear on us a bit. We were also finding it difficult to find time between client work to give our site the attention it needed, especially in the journal area.
We are very excited about our new design! We have toned down the color pallette and created a design that let's the images bring in the contrast and color. We have improved our portfolio display to include more images from each project during the process, which has improved how our work is showcased. Along with the design, we have reworked the site architecture as well as the content in the needed areas. It is also very important to us with this redesign to do a better job of keeping our blog up to date and create a place of information and discussion for all of our readers. It is our responsibility to provide the content, but we need you guys to start the discussion by commenting and letting us know what you think.
We hope you are as excited about the new site as we are! Browse around and let us know what you think in the comments area below. Thanks!

RBP Gives Social Media Presentation
No commentsRockbeatspaper was hired at the first of the year to complete a development-only project by the NC Credit Union League (NCCUL). The NCCUL partnered with the SC Credit Union League (SCCUL) to complete a marketing & awareness campaign called itpays2CU. After the successful launch of the itpays2CU web site, RBP was invited to give a presentation on web design & social media at a local marketing conference hosted by the NCCUL.
The conference was held on April 30th and was attended by 30-40 marketing professionals from several member credit unions across NC. We gave a 2-hour presentation focusing on the web design process and new emerging social media practices. We received a great response to the information given with a huge amount of interest being shown concerning the social media portion of our presentation. We found the attendees to be aware of the emergence of social media as a marketing tool and interested in ways to leverage these new tools within their organizations.
The NCCUL was very pleased with our presentation and the response received from the attendees. RBP has been invited to speak at a 3-day marketing conference to be held in September in Wilmington, NC. This conference is also being hosted by the NCCUL.

Maintaining Marketing Budgets
No comments2008 has definitely been a roller-coaster year in the US. With the burst of the housing bubble, financial market collapse and the presidential election, we have found ourselves in the middle of a national economic crisis. Consumers are hiding out while businesses are hurting and making plans on how to handle this economic downturn that we are in.
Some of the first budgets to get cut in times like these are marketing and advertising budgets. Everyone feels the effects of these budget cuts, including us. We have often said that cutting marketing budgets during tough economic times is a knee-jerk reaction that is counter-productive to the problems facing most companies. Businesses that are successful during these times understand that marketing and advertising must be maintained, even increased, to make up for the decrease in consumer demand while driving business in and sustaining companies during downturns.
I found a great article in the New York Times that addresses this issue and gives several top executive opinions on the matter. It is a good read for all business owners, small to large. Resolved to Keep on Marketing, Even in Tight-Fisted Times.

RBP Serves on ECPI Advisory Board
1 commentsThe ECPI College of Technology has recently introduced a web design degree program at their Greensboro campus. They recently held an advisory board luncheon and meeting on October 19th to discuss the curriculum for several of their degree programs. RBP was invited to the web design panel to discuss the current curriculum and the needs of local web design companies.
After enjoying a great lunch catered in by Macaroni Grill, we met for a couple of hours to review their current curriculum. We met with the Greensboro department head and the Raleigh campus department head, as well as several other faculty and students. We had an engaging conversation about their current curriculum and the needs of the local web design & development companies. Overall, we felt like the advisory panel was very productive and that we were able to offer some insight to them concerning changes in their curriculum. We enjoyed our time with them and we look forward to future advisory panels as well as a continued partnership with ECPI.
